Valerie Chua's artistic practice revolves around the appropriation of image stock and both personal and public film images as her primary subject matter. Her works capture the multifaceted nature of identity construction, often played out in our era of social media and visual culture. Chua's paintings explore the human impulse to curate, hoard, and mimic, which shapes the creation of a public persona that aligns with an inner sense of self. Through her use of familiar and ubiquitous images, Chua presents an incisive commentary on contemporary culture, underscoring the power and malleability of visual representation in shaping our perception of ourselves.

Born in the Philippines, Chua earned her Humanities degree in 2010 before applying for continued education at the New York Academy of Art in 2013 while working as an assistant to artist, Erik Jones. Her over five years of experience as a commercial illustrator and watercolorist served as an essential foundation for her current artistic output.

Chua's work has been displayed in various exhibitions worldwide, including the United States, Malaysia, South Korea, Thailand, Japan, and the Philippines. She is also works as a partner at a Southeast Asian artist-run cooperative, Faculty Projects.
